Morn is Clear and Cold yet pleasant Nothing of importance has hapend to day The day has pass very pleasantly away a member of the boys went up to Fort Massachusetts FRIDAY, 2 To day we comence to build our Stables I with two others are detailed to go with Cap Armstrong to dig Sinks the day has been warm and pleasant SATURDAY, 3 It is very warm this morn for the time of year - we are still at work at our Stables I am again detailed to work at them ____________ [ page 21] January, SUNDAY, 4, 1863. To day has ben cloudy and warm I and Two others went down to the creek and got back in time for meeting and then write a letter MONDAY, 5. To day is warm and pleasant went out to drill for the first time in Washington Nothing of importance has happend worth notice TUESDAY, 6. We go out and drill in the forenoon in the Afternoon it begins to rain and we go to drill as usual it rains till 2 oclock we go in from drill about 3 o clock ____________ [ page 22] January, WEDNESDAY, 7, 1863. on guard to day cold as the devil get on the 2nd relief at night was excused and did not stand again til morning THURSDAY, 8. Came off guard this morning and was excused from drill in the forenoon..... the Afternoon we have a Battalion drill to night it is colder and commences to freeze FRIDAY, 9. it froze hard last night hard and Snowed a little and this morning we have orders to prepare for Inspection and are ordered out to drill at 10. o clock and have a Scirmish [ sic, skirmish] drill[ 7] [ Note] [ 7] Text is written vertically ___________ [ page 23] January, SATURDAY, 10, 1863. Snowed again last night a very little this morning we wer brought with the sad news that one of our men died at the hospital W. M. Martin at his afternoon we Shall not drill we are to do our washing SUNDAY, 11. Snowed last night till midnight and then froze quite hard the morning was clear and pleasant and then clouded up again about 8 o clock we get our Saber to day the Col Issues an order to let no one out to day MONDAY, 12 On guard to day warm and have a very pleasant time only Stand 6 hours for the first time we have an our Sabers when we are on guard Cap Torry Officer of the day[ 8] [ Note] [ 8] Text is written vertically and upside down ____________ [ page 24] January, TUESDAY, 13, 1863. in the forenoon I stay in camp in the afternoon we go out and drill it is very mudy and rather unpleasant WEDNESDAY, 14. We are informed by Maj Brown that we are in gen Copeland Brig and that we are to have the Spencer Rifle drill all day nothing importance has happened THURSDAY, 15. I and Henry Bolt are detailed to bring water for a week is very muddy and unpleasant there is some prospects of an getting our pay tomorrow ____________ [ page 25] January, FRIDAY, 16, 1863. To day it is very Cold and windy the Paymaster has Come and Commenced paying off the Reg we are called and about 9 o clock to get our pay we have not drilled any to day SATURDAY, 17. This morning it is clear and cold we shall do no drilling to day the boys are in good Spirits to day they got their pay last night and some have gone to town SUNDAY, 18. It is very clear and pleasant to day we are called out to meeting to day about 11 o clock the day has pass away very pleasant ____________ [ page 26] January, MONDAY, 19, 1863. we are ordered to get ready for a ground Review we start for the 5th which is stationed on east Capitol hill where we join the 5th and are inspected by Brig Gen Casey TUESDAY, 20. to day it is raning a little Henry is sick and I have to Bring water alone in the forenoon in the afternoon he is better and helps me a little WEDNESDAY, 21. it rained all last night and is still raning a little to day it is very muddy and disagreeable getting around ____________ [ page 27] January, THURSDAY, 22, 1863. the day is warm and quite pleasant we go out in the forenoon and have a Sabre drill FRIDAY, 23. Orderly Carry morn paper to Gen Caseys 5th and 6th ordered out again to day leave Camp about 5 o clock this morning for Fairfax the wind blows quite hard but the Sun shines warm[ 12] THURSDAY, 12. went up to Camp to get the mail and get my clothes wrote a letter in the forenoon and then Came back to Hd Qrs went to Grovers at night raise Liberty pole[ 13] FRIDAY, 13. Stoped less than a 1/ 2 mile off Fairfax Court house to stay till we can find a camp ground the 5 and 6th are camp about 1/ 2 mile east of Fairfax court house ordered to go to Fairfax at 5 o clock FRIDAY, 27. We got to Fairfax last night and got into our quarters at dark have to Stand 3 hour guard last night 9 x 12 and 4 hours to day the 7th arrived here this morn it has been very pleasant SATURDAY, 28. 10 men detailed from the 7th to Stand guard Rained all day and is very muddy 11 prisoners sent to Alexandria this morning ____________ [ page 49] March, SUNDAY, 29, 1863. the Sun Shines but the wind blows cold carry dispatches to Col Gould in the forenoon and Stand 2 hours guard and 2 hours in the afternoon and 3 hours at night MONDAY, 30. I helped to move the commissary Qtrs in the afternoon and then went over to the Co to see about my horse THURSDAY, 2. orderly to day the sun shines warm the snow has all gone off carry the countersign[ 18] to the 5th 6th and 7th and the Battery carry dispatches to Gen Stahel about 8 o clock at night FRIDAY, 3. Orderly we do not stand guard to day on account of bad weather the Brgade Returns with 4 Prisoners one man Killed in Co C 6th and one wounded the Gen gets back about 10. o. clock at night MONDAY, 6. Orderly carry dispatches to the 5th 6th this morning and then take Cap Edwards horse to the Station and carry dispatches to the 7th Carry dispatches to Col Gray [ Note] [ 19] Def. Not able for Duty to day the horses that was Captured by the 5th and 6th are brought to the Provost Marshall[ 20] and he turns them over to the Gen went to Camp and met Lewis Ball came back with him to get a pass to go home he suceeds in getting a pass THURSDAY, 9. Orderly Lewis starts for home this morning rides to Alexendria with the Teamsters carry dispatches to the 5 6 and 7 and Battery [ Note] [ 20] Def. LOTCW provost marshal department: The U. S. department responsible for policing the army and for organizing conscription. ____________ [ page 53] April, FRIDAY, 10, 1863. to day has been very pleasant and warm the 5th and 6th are ordered out for 90 days for Picket duty at Vienna under Command of Col Grey SATURDAY, 11. Orderly Start to Bristo St with a dispatch get as far as [ illegible] and can get no farther and have to come back FRIDAY, 8. Routed out of camp about three o clock this morning expected that we was attacked went to the Station & got Breakfast then went to Pleasanton and then marched across to near New Baltimore and stayed the night WEDNESDAY, 14. The Infantry train was attacked this morning about day light we left Camp and march towards Centerville heavy fighting in our rear towards Manassus Junction we cross Bull Run Battle field and camp for the night do not unsaddle THURSDAY, 15. Stayed in Camp near Bull Run till 3 o clock then we are ordered to get ready to move move towards Centerville Camp 3 miles West of Centerville ____________ [ page 116] October, FRIDAY, 16, 1863. Camped last night in the old Black Horse cav Camp the Commisary goes to Fairfax to the train to draw our rations we leave Camp at night and move back to Bull Run Bridge and camp for the night Rains quite hard SATURDAY, 17. The Commisary does not get back with the rations till this morning we draw 5 days rations are ordered to move after breakfast move our quarters to the right of the Battle field old camp for the night SUNDAY, 18. to day we are turned over to the Brigade Provost Marshall of the 2nd Brigade left Camp just at night and drive the Rebs towards Bull Run ____________ [ page 117] October, MONDAY, 19, 1863. leave Camp at sunrise and move on to Broad run and have a fight get drove back Custer's wagon gets Captures the 1st Brig and Kill - gets cut off and a part of the 5th it is supposed that they are Captured TUESDAY, 20. Camped last night near Gainesville stay in Camp all day many of my Co was Captured or Killed Kilpatrick and the first Brig comes out [ illegible] all of our Infantry then went towards Warrington WEDNESDAY, 21. pack up and move our Camp about a mile from where we stayed last night the Genl also moved his quarters a little west from us ____________ [ page 118] October, THURSDAY, 22, 1863. Saddle up my horse and go about two miles and get some hay the rest of the boys cook some beans for dinner ~ Lieut Gray Takes some men to dismounted camp FRIDAY, 23. went over to the Co to draw some clothes but could not get any had some honey there some of the 1st went out last night and took some of Mosbys men Prisoner SATURDAY, 24.
